How to use LECHUZA pots

Self-watering pots look like one, on the outside, but it is one pot inside another one. One flowerpot is inserted into the other and the outer flowerpot works like a pot. In the gap between the two pots is stored the water that you pour from the special hole. Slowly the roots of the plant that are in the inner pot absorb the water and so the plant is watered. Add water as soon as the red indicator goes down on the outer tube.

The self-watering system has the specially designed Lechuza-PON substrate. This material separates the soil from the water tank, aerates the roots, and provides your plants with the right amount of water and nutrients to the plant roots. It is also equipped with a tank and a water meter which informs you when it is time to refill the tank.

How to water a self-watering pot

For the first 12 weeks, water the plant regularly by pouring water directly into the soil.

After this period or when the roots reach the water tank, fill the water tank from the water supply pipe until the level indicator is at "max".

Check the water level indicator frequently so you always know when to fill the water tank. Depending on the watering requirements of each plant, refill the tank approximately 1-2 weeks after the indicator shows "min".

The sleek outer container is waterproof, so you can place it directly on furniture or on the floor without worrying about leaks. Inside, there is an easy-to-move liner so you can change plants, clean roots and rinse leaves easily.

Why choose pots with self-watering systems?

The biggest advantage of self-watering pots is that they provide the convenience of knowing at all times that there is water in the tank. The watering needs of the plants vary depending on the season, the weather, the condition of the pot, the size of the plant and the stage of development of the plant. So when you water only when you have free time instead of when the plants really need watering, you run the risk of damaging your plants with excessive watering or no watering. With self-watering pots the soil is kept constantly moist, as the water is channelled from the tank at the same rate as the plants use it. Pots with automatic watering systems offer the ease of being able to water your plants while you are away from home or busy and do not have time to properly care for your plants.

Another important advantage of using self-watering pots is the water economy. When watering your plants from the top most water will evaporate from the soil surface. In contrast, in self-watering pots the plants draw water from the roots, there is less moisture on the soil surface and almost all the water is used by the plants.

The most common mistake of caring for plants is excessive watering, which can cause problems from fungi and diseases, while on the other hand too little watering deprives plants of the water they need to maintain their health and transfer nutrients. Self-watering pots can improve plant health by providing just the amount of water they need when they need it. Self-watering pots also help healthy root growth, as plant roots reach down (not branched) for water where the moisture level is higher.

Self-watering planters are ideal for busy people, they are environmentally friendly and can improve plant health. But there are some dis-advantages to be aware of when choosing this type of flower pot.

Watering pots are not suitable for all plants: For example succulents, cacti, orchids and other plants that need to let the soil dry until the next watering, the constant moisture provided by the watering system will cause root rot in these types of plants.

Also, self-watering pots do not work well outdoors in wet and rainy climates. Even if they are equipped with a drain valve to allow excess rainwater to be removed when installed outdoors you should check regularly for moisture and water that may remain in the pot. If you leave your plant in a self-watering pot in a place that often receives rainwater, then the pot will be filled with a lot of water and the roots will quickly rot.

Fertilizer

Add the ideal fertilizer for your plant to the water tank and make sure to regularly maintain this nutrient solution at the proper levels and rinse the tank regularly with fresh water to prevent toxic accumulation of fertilizer salts. To avoid salt accumulation, many people prefer to use compost for their plants.
