Guide to proper plant care

Gardening has proven to be the secret of longevity as studies show that it creates feelings of well-being, joy and relaxation. With simple tips and some basic gardening tools, you can turn the interior and the exterior of your home into a true masterpiece of nature.

Right containers

Pots and containers are the home of every plant and it is important that the plants have the right space to grow and bloom. In flower stores you can find small and large pots, plastic or ceramic, flower beds, barrels and other containers suitable for each plant.

The pot that accompanied your plant when you bought it has holes that serve to drain the water during watering. In case of transplanting, make sure that there are the necessary holes. If not you can easily make some, with a hot knife or a screwdriver.

Use suitable soil

Soil is a very significant factor in the health of indoor plants. It is an ingredient that can either destroy your favourite plants or lead to their longevity.

It is important that the soil you use is nutritious and contains all the right ingredients for plant growth. Pick soil with fertilizer and other nutrients suitable for any type of plant. Place the plant and cover it with the special soil, very quickly you will see the plant grow and beautify your garden.

In nature, the soil in which plants grow is naturally renewed and enriched by rainwater. On the contrary, indoor plants depend exclusively on what is contained in their pot as well as on the food we provide them.

Find the right light

One of the most common mistakes is that many people think that all plants need a lot of light! Of course, light is also necessary, but the direct exposure of plants to it, will create burns on their foliage. Therefore, bright direct sunlight should be avoided for most plant species, except cacti and some succulents that are more tolerant of it. For most species we recommend indirect sunlight and in particular sunlight that is reflected on a wall or diffused through a curtain. Of course, there are many plants that do well in low light environments.

Most plants love humidity

The average humidity in your home may be around 20-40%, but most indoor plants come from climates characterized by frequent rainfall and humidity that is around 80% during the year.

There are some easy ways you can follow to mimic the moisture your favourite plants have in their natural environment.

  • Place pebbles and water in the pot. This is the easiest and most effective way to increase the humidity of your plants. Whether you are using a simple pot or a decorative pot, create a base with pebbles, 4-5 cm high and put water up to about halfway. Then place the pot on the mattress layer, but be careful not to come into direct contact with water. Caution: To avoid the formation of microorganisms that may harm your plants, clean the tray or pot from water every 1-2 weeks or so.
  • Placing many plants together. Plants release moisture into the atmosphere through a process called perspiration. Therefore, by placing 3-4 indoor plants with similar needs in humidity, a "tropical" microclimate is created in your own home, thus helping your plants to stay healthy and happy! Note: Not all indoor plants love moisture so it is good to always consult your florist to group them properly.
  • Spray them with water. Spraying with water is another popular way to increase the humidity of your favourite plant locally and at the same time keep them healthy. Although the effect of this method is short-lived, for many indoor plants, a water spray every 3-4 days is a pleasure they enjoy more than anything else!
  • You can also invest in the purchase of a dehumidifier. These are devices that increase the humidity throughout the space, thus creating the coveted climate that your favourite plants are so looking for. At the same time, you benefit, as the dry atmosphere is known to affect health, skin and sleep quality!
  • Place your plants in rooms with humidity. Areas of your home such as the bathroom and the kitchen are oases of moisture, ideal for indoor plants that thrive in humid environments! At the same time, it is an ideal decoration solution, offering harmony in spaces where cold materials such as metals and ceramics traditionally prevail.

All about watering

Apart from the origin, the size of the plant and the pot, the season, the quality of the soil and a lot of other factors play a role in watering the indoor plants! The exact amount of water and the frequency of watering depend on the species and variety of each plant.

Follow the watering instructions that you will find in each of our plants in our online store and you will not have any problem with their proper growth!

When to water my plants?

When the upper 3-5cm of their soil is dry, then it is time for watering. And how do you understand that? Just put the index finger of your hand on the soil of the pot. If the soil gets dirty on your finger, it means that the plant still has moisture so it does not need watering. Otherwise, if your finger comes out clean from the soil of the pot, then it's time for some water!

What you should always keep in mind is to make sure that excessive watering is fatal for a plant. The same, of course, applies if our plants do not receive the water it needs to produce the nutrients it needs to grow.

How should I water my plants?

The water should fall gently near the root of the plant. Its duration is such that the plant is thirsty and this will be seen if the water stagnates. Drainage is also very important, as excessive water accumulation can rot the roots of the plant. In addition, watering should be done at such a time that the plant uses the water. Thus, hours with high temperatures or strong winds should be avoided.

How often should I water my plants?

Each plant has its own needs and we need to know what they are. Depending on the season, temperature, location each plant needs the appropriate amount of water.

In the hot months watering should be frequent as the plant has to deal with high temperatures and lack of moisture. It is good to spray the leaves to cool the plant. During the winter months, watering should be continued. Strong and cold winter winds can also cause water shortage problems.

Tip: Occasionally rinse your plant in the sink. Watering in the bathtub or sink, in addition to being a safe solution for the needs of your plants in water, is also a solution for the removal of salts and elements that burden its quality. Just place your plant under the open tap for 3-5 minutes and then leave it for 20' to drain the excess water before putting it back in place.

When should I add fertilizer?

The frequency of fertilization is determined by the type of plant, its growth stage, season and our own desires for rich foliage or flowering. The basic fertilization is done towards the end of winter while the supplementary one is done when the plant is in strong growth. The supplement should be done about every two months except the summer months. Always follow the instructions for using the fertilizer so as not to cause problems to your plants.

Do my plants need pruning?

Pruning is done to remove unnecessary branches, to improve plant growth and renew. A good pruning helps to balance the vegetation with the flowering. Finally, the pruning provides ventilation to the plant. Always use clean and good quality pruning shears. Try to cut sideways, making clean and smooth cuts. The secret is not to hurt your plant.
