Choose flowers by name! Part I

There are different kinds of flowers that we come across in our life, but we hardly know their names or what they look like. Vibrant-colored, eye-catching flowers that have a specific meaning and they are significant in their own way. Here is an easy and useful flower list that will help you learn the flowers by their name:

Aster

Asters are daisy-like perennials with starry-shaped flower heads. They bring delightful color to the garden in late summer and autumn when many of your other blooms may be fading.

The plant’s height ranges from 20 cm to 2.50 meters, depending on the type. The plant can be used in many places, such as in borders, rock gardens, or wildflower gardens. Asters also attract butterflies to your garden!

Asters come in a wide variety and grow quite effortlessly. Asters provide a large store of nectar that attracts pollinators, they are disease resistant, and bloom predictably and reliably.

Asters prefer climates with cool, moist summers, especially cool night temperatures. Select a place with partial to full sunlight.

Soil should be moist, well-drained, and average to humus-rich.

Fertilize soil prior to planting.

Give plants plenty of water at planting. Add mulch after planting to keep soil cool and prevent weeds.

Celosia

Celosia is an annual plant cultivated for its strange looking flowers that resemble roosters’ head, that’s why it is also called as cockscomb. It grows in Africa, India and Indonesia but also in most Mediterranean countries.  Its leaves are large, heart-shaped or oval, with sharp and characteristic streaks in green or red. The flowers of this flower are large, up to 30 cm long, wide and hard like a brush and have a velvety texture. Their color is deep red or purple and more rarely yellow, gold, orange or pink.

Celosia care is simple and easy, with low maintenance you can get blooming flowers in your home and garden. As celosia is a tropical plant it loves the warm and humid climate and need full sun to grow well. For these plants, the more sun, the better. Houseplants benefit from a south-facing window or balcony, also, remember to not let the soil dry out in the sun. The plant grows well in containers but indoor air in homes remains too dry for flowers to flourish. Help them by running a humidifier next to the plant or by placing the pot on a shallow tray filled with pebbles and a bit of water. Fertilize celosia with liquid fertilizer once a month. When the plant starts to bloom, it needs fertilizer more frequently (every two weeks).

Delphinium

Delphinium is the genus name for a group of approximately three hundred flowering perennials in the buttercup family. Also known as Larkspurs, the various members of this garden favorite are native to all parts of the northern hemisphere. Blue delphiniums are the most well-known, but there are other colors, too, such as deep red, bright yellow or brilliant white. This flower spread quickly across the ground to form dense clumps of foliage topped with cute purple flowers. Aside from being a great bedding plant for filling in around trees and shrubs, this flower symbolizes some deep emotions and concepts.

Eremurus

Eremurus also known as fox-tail lily or giant asphodel is one of the most useful plants for tall arrangements, equally suitable for weddings, pedestal vases and also for a corner vase in the house. This flower that resembles a bottle brush can withstand your vase for several weeks after being cut.

Eremuri are mostly grown by professionals for the cut flower trade and are rarely used as a garden plant. The spectacular tall spikes bloom in early spring, reaching up to as much as three meters in height. This flower blooms before most of the other tall plants in the garden, so you can have a striking early border for other spring bulbs. Eremurus blooming can last up to three weeks in the garden. The first shoots that appear in the early spring are frost sensitive, so cover with protective mulch until frost is no longer a danger.

Eremurus is originated from Asia, belongs to the lily family and has a tall cluster of bell-shaped flowers in various colors such as bright yellow, snow white, pastel pink and orange.

Gladiolus

Gladiolus is a classic perennial known for its tall flower spikes. The genus Gladiolus contains around 300 species, 250 of these are native to South Africa, and 10 are native to Eurasia. They are also native to South America and some species are found growing in the wild in Southern and Eastern Europe. Gladioli have their roots in tropical regions, and are therefore very sensitive to climate change. They do not withstand the cold winters of some countries, but they still grow well in the hot summer months. They belong to the Iris family.

All species grow from gladiolus bulbs, but they are not really bulbs they are called corms. A corm is a shortened and thickened section of the stem that appears at the base of the plant. Gladiolus plants are attractive, perennial herbs and semi hardy in temperate climates. They grow from rounded, symmetrical corms that are enveloped in several layers of brownish, fibrous tunics.

Heliconia

Heliconia, is native to the tropical Americas and the Pacific Ocean island. There are about 40 different species of heliconia. The leaves of this plant are paddle-shaped, and they are related to the banana family. Heliconias are sometimes called "lobster claws" or "parrot flowers" because of their beak-like "bracts" which can be orange, purple, red, and yellow, pink, green or a combination of these. A bract is a leaf structure at the base of a flower. Its flowers are tiny and found inside these bracts, which are so large and colorful that they almost hide the flowers altogether. There keeps the flower's sweet nectar tucked away so that only specialized birds can get to it.

Heliconia is a perennial plant that may grow up to 4.5 meters tall in nature but likely only to 90 cm to 2 meters in a home landscape. The thick bracts make excellent cut flowers. Leaves are glossy green, oval and paddle shaped. They grow in an upright habit with the flower stems in the center. Flower bracts are arranged in terminal racemes, which may be held erect or pendulant. Heliconia is a tropical plant that will arise every year from the rhizomes. Need a lot of sun and heat, so place it under the sun or in a brightly area or keep it under a sun lamp for extended periods. New stems will develop after the old plant has flowered, creating a continuous display of the flowers over the years. Freezing temperatures will damage or kill the plant. They need fertilizing in spring for best flowering and again every two months until fall.
